Travel to Utrecht

From the US:

The best travel option from the US is to fly into Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS).

US passport holders usually do not need a tourist VISA to visit the Netherlands, but if you are connecting through another country you may require one even if you do not leave the airport. You can check your documentation requirements here https://www.netherlandsworldwide.nl/visa-the-netherlands/visa-required

Trains run from the airport to Utrecht roughly every 15 minutes during the day (for a 30 minute journey). This does not need to be planned or booked in advance. In the night trains depart once per hour (for a 45 minute journey)

See the ‘getting around’ page for more information about hiring a car in the Netherlands.

Take the Eurostar from London st Pancras to Rotterdam Centraal where you can then transfer onto a train to Utrecht Centraal.

Boat:

There are three main ferry routes between England and The Netherlands. This is our recommended option if you want to use your own car in the Netherlands. You will not be able to access your vehicle during the crossing (daytime or overnight) so make sure you prepare for this.

Newcastle - Amsterdam
Operated by DFDS. One overnight crossing per day. Usually departs around 5pm. Tickets need to be booked in advance.

Hull - Rotterdam
Operated by P&O Ferries. One overnight crossing per day. Usually departs around 8pm. Tickets need to be booked in advance.

Harwich - Rotterdam
Operated by Stena Line. One daytime and one overnight crossing per day. This is often the best budget option of the three ferry routes with cheaper fares and no need to book a cabin on the daytime crossings.
