Getting around

Bikes
The best way to travel around Utrecht is by bike. Many streets have dedicated red bike paths that are separate from the road. As a bicyclist you can also use any road without bike lanes (except for freeways of course), but stick to the right hand side so people can overtake you.
Make sure you lock your bike whenever you leave it even if it's just for a few minutes and always turn the bike lights on after dark.

Public transport
The Netherlands has a well connected public transport system with busses, trains and trams. If you're planning a journey in advance please note that the Netherlands has a reduced transport service in July and August.
Journeys can be planned using Google maps or using the 9292 app. Live updates on Google maps are reasonably reliable.
All public transport can be paid for with a contactless card or smartphone wallet. With the trains and trams tap your card on the sensors at the barrier or on the platform and then tap out when you leave the station at your destination. The bus also uses the same tap in and tap out system but the sensor is on the bus, enter through the front door by the driver and exit out the middle or back doors. There will likely be a small charge immediately and then within 24 hours the entire day’s transport charges will leave your bank account.
Our home and all our wedding venues are within a 15 minutes walk from the number 341 bus which also stops at Utrecht Centraal, Vaartsche Rijn and close by Bunnik train station.
Utrecht is a very pedestrian friendly city, but bikes have right of way at all times. Avoid walking on the red bike paths and check for cyclists at a pedestrian crossing even with a green light for walking.
Cars
You can travel using your own or a hired car in the Netherlands. Speed limits are often low nearby the city centre. Speed limits will be shown in kilometres.
Bicycles (and pedestrians) have the right of way over cars.
Outside of city centers, you can park on the street and pay at parking meters marked with a big blue 'P'. If you're driving to a city center we'd recommend searching for a relatively well-rated parking garage on Google Maps.
